Pickalbo: From Viral Joke to Annual Pickleball Tradition
July 29, 2025 • 5 min read
Against the backdrop of Baguio City's pine-covered mountains and cool mountain air replacing the tropical heat, pickleball players gathered at the prestigious Camp John Hay Sports Pavilion for what has become an unlikely Filipino sports tradition. The second Pickalbo tournament proved that what started as a joke among friends in 2025 has evolved into something much bigger - a celebration of community, humor, and the unique idea of bald vs guys with hair on the Pickleball court.
The Pickalbo Phenomenon: Where Humor Meets Competition
What happens when the smooth-headed and those with Samson-like locks collide on the pickleball court? Pickalbo!
This homegrown event, with its clever fusion of 'Pickleball' and the Filipino word for bald, 'Kalbo,' not only brought the community together but also celebrated a unique aspect of Filipino culture - the love for humor and camaraderie.
It wasn't just about dinks and volleys but about confidence and perhaps a scalp-shining strategy.
The Meteoric Rise of Pickleball

Pickleball isn't just a trend. It's sweeping across America and cementing its status as one of the fastest-growing sports for four consecutive years. With close to 20 million players in the US in 2024 and a massive 311% growth in the past 3 years, it has become a full-blown phenomenon.
To keep up with demand, new courts are popping up everywhere. There are now 68,000 pickleball courts all over the US.
Where It All Began: Pickalbo 2025

Every great story has a humble beginning, and for Pickalbo, it was a joke that went "viral" among friends.
From Silly Idea to Game Changer
The brainchild of Jun Ureta, a pickleball enthusiast, it all started with a custom-printed shirt proclaiming "Pickalbo," a clever fusion of "Pickleball" and the Filipino word for bald, "Kalbo." What began as a personal gag quickly caught on, with friends clamoring for their shirts and exclaiming, "Kwela daw!" ("It's funny/cool!").
The lightbulb moment hit Jun: What if this jest became a real-life pickleball tournament exclusively for bald players?
He shared the crazy idea with his former officemate and long-time sports buddy, Ron Castro, now a fellow Senior Pickleball addict. He listened and shared his thoughts, and they parted ways.
Initially, Ron seemed to dismiss it, prompting a playful thought from Jun: "Parang dedma lang ang lolo mo, Tse!" (Grandpa's just ignoring it, Tsk!)
But the next day the call came: "Jun, let's have a meeting - let's do your Pickleball Tournament."
They pitched the idea to Coach Mark Casal, the Pickleball Ambassador of the Philippines, and he instantly got it (being a proud kalbo himself), laughed, loved it, and jumped right in.
Building the Dream Team

The ball started rolling with Jun and Janna Dioso handling the merch, branding, and all the creative stuff, Ron took care of marketing and brought in sponsors, and Mark Casal invited his tribe to join and sponsor as well.
The initial goal was to gather 40 bald players. Reality set in, and they only got 20! It seemed the baldies were busy.
But as is often the case with passion projects, sponsors gave their overwhelming support in cash, goodies, and freebies, enough to make every participant feel like a champ.
The surplus of support sparked another brilliant idea: why not open another tournament for players they had initially excluded for having hair?
And just like that, HAIRcules was born!
The Champions of both tournaments had a face off and the Bald Guys won!
The Inaugural Tournament

The Dome vs Mane Pickleball Classic was a resounding success, filled with fun and competitive spirit that kept everyone on the edge of their seats!
From the onset, the organizers had clear objectives: make it fun but competitive, keep it within 5 hours, make the venue comfy for participants and audience, and, if budget permits, feed the players. Miraculously, they nailed it!
Every player went home with a loot bag valued at least $70, and exciting prizes were raffled off.
Tivoli Royale provided a fantastic venue, and the day culminated in an unforgettable awarding party at Tivoli Royale's The Grid Karaoke Bar with unlimited dim sum and karaoke singing!
Everyone had a blast.
Year Two: Pickalbo Takes Baguio by Storm

The decision to relocate the flagship event from Metro Manila to Baguio City wasn't just about finding a new venue - it was a strategic pivot that transformed Pickalbo from a one-day novelty into a sophisticated sports tourism product.
By 2026, people weren't just coming for the tournament - they were planning Baguio vacations around it, creating economic impact that extended far beyond the court.
Proves that people will travel for the right combination of sport, community and destination.
The Growing Movement: "If You Joke, They Will Come!"

"If you joke, they will come!" - What started as a funny shirt has now become a two-year tradition that shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, it's accelerating.
How often does a silly idea spiral into a full-blown event where everyone feels like family?
The friendly banter between the "Kal-Bros" and "Haircules" participants created a powerful sense of belonging. It wasn't just about the competition, but the good vibes and mutual support that made everyone feel like part of a big, happy family.
The Pickalbo phenomenon taps into something uniquely Filipino - the concept of "kwela" (humor/coolness) combined with fierce community loyalty. The friendly banter between the "Kal-Bros" and "Haircules" participants creates a powerful sense of belonging that goes beyond typical tournament camaraderie.
Parting Words for Every Pickleball Champion
Beyond its thrilling games, the PicKalbo tournament highlights a universal truth: grooming plays a significant role in how you feel, both on and off the court.
Whether you sport a gleaming bald head or a stylish mane, how you groom (or don't groom!) can impact your confidence, comfort, and performance.
We've all experienced the confidence a good shave provides, making us feel sharper and ready to tackle what comes next, be it a big meeting or a crucial pickleball match.
For shavers, this story reinforces the importance of a consistent, comfortable shave. For the "Kalbos" out there, keeping your scalp smooth isn't just about looks; it's about minimizing distractions and maximizing comfort during intense physical activity, allowing for better heat regulation and a distraction-free game. For the "HAIRcules," proper grooming of facial hair or maintaining a clean neckline ensures you're game-ready and looking sharp.
